Story of a Painting: Young Warrior with Pangolin, Oil on copper, 12 x 12, 2018

Picture
Quiet strength. The message of this painting is an affirmation of power and grace. It says to our young women in particular, that nature has provided all that you need to be tough and withstand any challenge. The small animal nestled on the shoulder of the model is a pangolin. This beautiful creature (now endangered) symbolzizes a warrior’s spirit. Its strong outer scales make it impervious to attack. In African art and ceremonial dress, the pangolin has stood for fighters and literally been a part of protective armor. This painting honors the survival of women and calls for their continued strength.
